What is a Doula?

A trained professional that provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to a mother before, during and after childbirth to help her achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible.

Benefits of a Doula:

In 2011, the largest systematic review of doula support was conducted.  It included 21 randomized control trials and included 15,000 women.  The women supported by a doula were:

  • 28% less likely to have a cesarean.
  • 31% less likely to have Pitocin augmentation of labor.
  • 9% less likely to use pain medication
  • 34% less likely to rate their birth experience negatively.

The Benefits of Placenta Encapsulation

Placentophagy is the practice of ingesting the placenta. When a woman gives birth she loses many of the useful hormones contained within the placenta when it detaches from the uterine wall.  It can take several months for the body to re-balance its hormones in the post partum period.  Taking placenta pills helps reintroduce these hormones into the mothers body in small doses until her body resumes its normal hormonal balance.

Benefits of Placenta Encapsulation:

  • Decrease in post partum bleeding
  • Increase in energy
  • Increase in milk supply
  • Improved mood
  • Reduced rate of post partum depression

The Benefits of a TENS Unit

What is the function of a TENS Unit?

TENS is a drug-free form of pain relief used by women in labor. TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation.

How Does it Work?

  • the electrical pulses prevent pain signals from reaching your brain via gate control theory.

  • the pulses stimulate your body to release natural, pain relieving substances called endorphins.

  • it helps you to feel in control of your labor and thus decreases anxiety.

  • it offers a distraction from your contractions.

Benefits of a TENS Unit in labor:

  • You control it.

  • It's portable and non invasive.

  • It is safe for you and your baby.

  • It can be used in any birth setting.

  • There are no unwanted side effects.

A TENS Unit is contraindicated if you:

  • have a cardiac pacemaker or a heart rhythm problem.

  • If you are pregnant and NOT in labor.  TENS Unit is indicated for labor only.

“...she was wholeheartedly and joyfully serving me and my family. She worked tirelessly through my labors by physically, emotionally, spiritually, mentally supporting me in the exact ways I needed to be supported.  It’s like she had this sixth sense of what I needed.”
